Discipline Notice: Peter Alan Kiddie

In 2020, Mr. Kiddie was retained to design a five-storey apartment building in Duncan and was the original structural Engineer of Record for the building. The building was not designed in accordance with the requirements of the 2012 BC Building Code (BCBC 2012) or the Canadian Standard Association’s Standard for the Design of Concrete Structures.
In the Consent Order, Mr. Kiddie admitted that he demonstrated unprofessional conduct related to the design of the building and agreed that, among other things, he failed to:
- adequately design the suspended slab, including ensuring that the punching shear capacity was adequate, that the slab was sufficiently thick, and that the shear reinforcement met the BCBC 2012 shear stress limits;
- include sufficient details in the structural design, including the summation design load for the ground floor and the placement of the reinforcing bars in the suspended slab;
- adequately design the wood frame components in the structural design, including ensuring adequate shear walls and preparing a stud wall schedule that was consistent with the actual vertical loads applied to the walls;
- complete adequate calculations and analysis to support the structural design for the building; and
- ensure an independent review of the structural design was completed prior to the construction of the building or, in the alternative, documented.
As outlined in the Consent Order, Mr. Kiddie’s registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC was cancelled as of February 3, 2025. Mr. Kiddie agreed not to reapply for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC at any time in the future.
Mr. Kiddie paid $5,000 toward the legal and investigative costs of Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
