New Regulatory Learning Module on Duty to Report Available
The duty to report module must be completed in the current reporting year between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025.
The duty to report is a critical component of the regulation of professional engineering and geoscience in the public interest and is an important statutory and ethical obligation that registrants need to consider in their practice. The duty to report requires registrants to report their concerns when they become aware of unsafe, illegal, or unethical practices or risk of significant harm to the environment or to the health or safety of the public or a group of people.The learning outcomes for registrants include:
- What the duty to report is and the specific requirements under the Professional Governance Act, as well as the Bylaws and Code of Ethics of Engineers and Geoscientists BC;
- Factors to consider when assessing whether the duty to report may be triggered;
- Steps that may be required ahead of making a report and what's required when reporting a situation; and
- Understanding the process and procedures to follow when a report is made to Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
This course was developed by Engineers and Geoscientists BC and an external consultant specialized in the development of online educational content for professionals. This course was also reviewed by various focus groups.
The module is free and will take approximately one hour to complete. Once the module is completed, it will be automatically recorded in the Continuing Education Reporting System (CERS) and a green check mark will appear under the Regulatory Learning Requirement in CERS.
