Terms of Reference

Purpose:

The purpose of Engineers and Geoscientists BC Climate Change and Sustainability Advisory Group is to support the organization in its regulatory function to establish, monitor, and enforce standards of practice to enhance the quality of professional practice in the best interest of the public. The advisory group is responsible for providing advice to the organization on relevant matters related to climate change and identifying, advancing, and facilitating sustainability in the practice of engineering and geoscience. 

Reporting Structure:

The advisory group reports directly to the Director, Professional Practice, Standards and Development (PPSD), or their delegate. The advisory group provides advice and may make recommendations for discussion and consideration to the Professional Practice Advisory Group. The advisory group is assisted by the Manager, Climate Change and Sustainability Initiatives. 

Duties and Expectations:

CCSAG members will contribute to CCSAG’s main functions, which are:

  • Through information gathering and discussions, to develop and recommend key messages to registrants, government, and communities on the subject of climate change and sustainability for PPSD’s consideration.
  • Based on input from registrants and the public, to consider climate change matters that would be appropriate for government policy development or policy improvement and make recommendations to PPSD in respect thereof.
  • To review applicable professional practice guidance published by Engineers and Geoscientists BC and provide suggestions for modifications, updates, and revisions as necessary.
  • To review new or updated guidance documents related to climate change and sustainability from other organizations and make recommendations to PPSD.
  • To assess the need for additional Engineers and Geoscientists BC guidance documents related to climate change and make recommendations to the Professional Practice Advisory Group.
  • To provide recommendations on the Continuing Education Program to enhance registrants’ knowledge on climate change and sustainability topics.
  • To provide recommendations to PPSD on external correspondence/communications, and requests for Engineers and Geoscientists BC support and/or participation in events/activities related to climate change.
  • To provide recommendations to the Board to support the development and implementation of Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Organizational Climate Strategy.

Skills and Qualifications:

The following will be considered for advisory group membership:

  • Be a registrant in good standing with Engineers and Geoscientists BC as:
    • An engineering professional (P.Eng. or P.L.Eng.)
    • A geoscience professional  (P.Geo. or P.L.Geo.)
    • A trainee (EIT or GIT)
  • Be a registrant in good standing with another regulatory body
  • Be a representative of government, academia, or involved with organizations leading in climate action and sustainability
  • Demonstrated active engagement in a climate change related field
  • Demonstrated leadership in the incorporation of sustainability into professional practice
  • Demonstrated experience working in BC with or for a related industry group or organization (see Attachment B of the TOR)
  • Applicant’s firm size and practice areas
Registrants are also encouraged to apply if they identify with the following descriptions:
  • Indigenous identifying applicants
  • Registrants having experience working with Indigenous communities
  • Registrants with expertise in the application of a climate lens to the professional practice of engineering and geoscience

Term of Office:

Appointments are three years in length, renewable twice for a maximum of nine consecutive years, unless otherwise extended by the Director, PPSD.

Average Time Commitment:

  • Meetings are held at least 6 times per year, approximately every 4-6 weeks (except during the summer).
  • Meetings are approximately 1-2 hours in length and require approximately 1 hour of preparation per meeting to review agenda items and prepare for discussion.
  • Meetings are held either virtually, at the Engineers and Geoscientists BC office in Burnaby (if permitted under health guidelines), or in a hybrid format.
  • In addition, CCSAG members are expected to volunteer for subgroups to work on guidelines, strategic initiatives, and other special projects as required.
