Purpose

The Engineers and Geoscientists BC Professional Practice Advisory is an Advisory Group reporting to the Director, Professional Practice, Standards and Development (PPSD). Its mandate is to provide advice to Engineers and Geoscientists BC on issues that influence the practice of professional engineering and professional geoscience in BC, considering input from delegates from the following practice-related advisory groups:

  • Built Environment Advisory Group
  • Climate Change and Sustainability Advisory Group
  • High Technology Advisory Group
  • Manufacturing and Equipment Advisory Group
  • Natural Resources and Natural Hazards Advisory Group

Reporting Structure

Advisory Group members report to the Director, Professional Practice, Standards and Development.

Duties and Expectations

Advisory Group members are responsible:

  • To bring issues facing industry to the attention of Engineers and Geoscientists BC for discussion and consideration, and to discuss issues brought forward by the practice-related advisory groups referenced above;
  • To assist with practice advice questions and practice boundary issues related to various areas of practice when they arise; 
  • To assist PPSD staff with prioritizing recommended topics for professional practice guidance development;
  • To fulfill their role in the development of professional practice guidance as outlined in Board Policy CO-21-105;
  • To review applicable quality management standards and guides and provide suggestions for amendments, updates, and revisions as requested;
  • To assist staff with prioritizing continuing education sessions related to professional practice and regulatory learning.
  • When requested, to assist Engineers and Geoscientists BC with strategic initiatives;
  • When requested, to assist Engineers and Geoscientists BC in responding to consultation on external initiatives or documents from related industry groups and organizations; and
  • With approval from the Director, PPSD or their delegate, to initiate the formation of working groups on specialized matters including but not limited to development of professional practice guidelines.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Should be a professional engineer or professional geoscientist registered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC and have a minimum of 10 years of professional practice experience; however, representatives from other regulated professions who regularly interact with engineers and geoscientists will be considered.
  • Should have previous volunteering experience with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

Term of Office

  • Appointments are three years in length, renewable twice for a maximum of nine consecutive years, unless otherwise extended by the Director, Professional Practice, Standards and Development.

Average Time Commitment

  • Meetings are held at least 4 times per year, or more often, if required, at the call of the Chair.
  • The Advisory Group may meet in person, by telephone conference, or through electronic means, where all members may simultaneously hear each other and participate during the meeting. 
  • Before each meeting, members are required to review agenda items and be prepared for discussion.
