Bridging Pilot Program

If you are a Professional Licensee Engineering (P.L.Eng.) and meet certain additional criteria, you can apply to bridge to a professional engineer (P.Eng.) licence.

Application Requirements

Reference

You must provide four references who can confirm the nature of your work experience:

  • All the references must be positive;
  • At least two of the references must be provided by a P.Eng. within the discipline of practice; and
  • At least one reference must be provided by a P.Eng. supervisor.

Work Experience

To apply, you must have more than 10 years of well-documented, progressive work experience, including at least 4 years as a P.L.Eng. and at least 1 year in a Canadian environment.

Please refer to the Competency Assessment System for details.

Academic Requirements

You must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams, or another exam as determined by a Board of Examiners.

Project, Report, and Interview Requirements

You must pass a technical interview (conducted in the style of a thesis defense) by a panel of professional engineers. The interview will be based on a technical report that you will provide.

The report must be 5,000 to 10,000 words long, and based on a design study or a report of original authorship. The topic will be assigned to you and will reflect your experience, and provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate your technical competence to the standard expected of applicants for P.Eng. registration. To ensure that the project undertaken is of a sufficient scope and challenge, the topic will be assigned from a project undertaken approximately 18 months after you began practicing as a P.L.Eng.

The report and interview will be used to determine whether you have the knowledge and technical experience relating to the topic assigned to you that would normally be expected from someone graduating with an exemplifying qualification (4-year bachelor’s degree in engineering or applied science).
