Glossary of Terms for Registrant Directory of Individuals

Category of Registrant

The following are reserved titles and designations protected by law in British Columbia.

Trainee Registrants

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) An Engineer-in-Training is a Trainee Registrant who has met the academic qualifications, and is gaining the required experience and competencies for registration as a professional engineer. Engineers-in-Training may not engage in the Reserved Practice of professional engineering or of professional geoscience unless they are under the direct supervision of a professional engineer or professional geoscientist.
Geoscientist in Training (GIT) A Geoscientist-in-Training is a Trainee Registrant who has met the academic qualifications, and is gaining the required experience and competencies for registration as a professional geoscientist. Geoscientists-in-Training may not engage in the Reserved Practice of professional engineering or of professional geoscience unless they are under the direct supervision of a professional engineer or professional geoscientist.

Professional Registrants

Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) A Professional Engineer is a Registrant who has qualified to engage in the Reserved Practice of professional engineering. The status, “Current – Practising” indicates that a Professional Engineer has met the ongoing requirements to maintain their right to engage in Reserved Practice. All other categories of status prohibit a Professional Engineer from engaging in Reserved Practice unless they do so under the direct supervision of a professional engineer or a Professional Licensee Engineering whose supervision is conducted within their authorized area of Reserved Practice.
Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) A Professional Geoscientist is a Registrant who has qualified to engage in the Reserved Practice of professional geoscience. The status, “Current – Practising” indicates that a Professional Geoscientist has met the ongoing requirements to maintain their right to engage in Reserved Practice. All other categories of status prohibit a Professional Geoscientist from engaging in Reserved Practice unless they do so under the direct supervision of a Professional Geoscientist or a Professional Licensee Geoscience whose supervision is conducted within their authorized area of Reserved Practice.

A Professional Licensee Engineering is a Registrant who has qualified to engage in an authorized area of the Reserved Practice of professional engineering. The authorized area of reserved practice for each Professional Licensee Engineering is provided on the Register. The status, “Current – Practising” indicates that a Professional Licensee Engineering has met the ongoing requirements to maintain their right to engage in Reserved Practice. All other categories of status prohibit a Professional Licensee Engineering from engaging in Reserved Practice unless they do so under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer or a Professional Licensee Engineering whose supervision is conducted within their authorized area of Reserved Practice.
Professional Licensee Geoscience (P.L. Geo.) A Professional Licensee Geoscience is a Registrant who has qualified to engage in an authorized area of the Reserved Practice of professional geoscience. The authorized area of Reserved Practice for each Professional Licensee Geoscience is provided on the Register. The status, “Current – Practising” indicates that a Professional Licensee Geoscience has met the ongoing requirements to maintain their right to engage in Reserved Practice. All other categories of status prohibit a Professional Licensee Geoscience from engaging in Reserved Practice unless they do so under the direct supervision of a Professional Geoscientists or a Professional Licensee Geoscience whose supervision is conducted within their authorized area of Reserved Practice.
Designated Structural Engineer (Struct.Eng.) Designated structural engineer (Struct.Eng.) is a sub-category of registration that is granted to qualified professional engineers in British Columbia. This designation is required for structural engineers to act as the Structural Engineer of Record for Part 3 buildings in certain municipalities in BC, including the City of Vancouver, City of Burnaby, and City of Langley.

  • the municipality, province or state, and country in which an individual Registrant is based;
  • if applicable, the name of an individual Registrant’s employer;
  • business contact information for an individual Registrant, which may be provided by way of the individual Registrant’s
    • business email address,
    • business telephone number,
    • business mailing address, or
    • business website, if the business website contains business contact information for the individual Registrant in the form of email address, telephone number or mailing address.

Dates

Registrant Details

Date of First Registration

The date on which an individual Registrant was first granted registration as a Registrant or enrolment as a Trainee.

Date of Most Recent Registration

The start date of the individual Registrant’s current registration as a Registrant or enrolment as a trainee.

Expiry Date of Registration

The date in the past or future that registration expired or will expire. Absent cancellation or suspension of registration due to disciplinary requirements, registration of current individual Registrants expires December 31 of each year and must be renewed annually.

Registration History

Granted Date

The start date(s) of an individual Registrant’s registration as a Registrant or enrolment as a Trainee.

End Date

The dates on which an individual registration ended due to non-renewal by the Registrant, failure to report required information or a disciplinary order.

Discipline of Registration

Discipline of Registration denotes the original discipline through which a Registrant’s qualifications were approved and the Registrant was found competent to practise. Registrants may have added competence over time and are bound by the Code of Ethics to practise only in those fields where training and ability make the Registrant professionally competent and to maintain competence in relevant specializations, including advances in the regulated practice and relevant science.

None/No Disciplinary History

Denotes that a Registrant has no disciplinary history with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

Yes

Denotes that a Registrant has a disciplinary history with Engineers and Geoscientists BC and that it is set out in the Disciplinary Orders section of the individual Registrant’s record on the Register.

Disciplinary Orders

Includes a brief description and a link to the relevant documentation.

Current

Denotes unresolved Disciplinary Orders including Disciplinary Decisions from the Discipline Committee or Consent Orders agreed to by an individual Registrant relating to restrictions on the individual Registrant’s right to engage in Reserved Practice.

Past

Denotes Disciplinary Orders that have been met, resolved or superseded.

Registration/Licence Number

The unique registration/licence number that is given to each Professional Registrant and appears on the registration certificate, stamp and seal of each Professional Registrant.

Practice Information

Industry of Practice

Industry of Practice declared by each individual Registrant.

Area(s) of Practice

Self-declared area(s) of practice by each individual Registrant.

Status and Reason for Registration End Date

Cancelled – Not Renewed by Registrant

Denotes that a Registrant has chosen not to renew their registration by not paying annual fees or not acting on a suspension following non-compliance with mandatory reporting or Continuing Education requirements. 

Cancelled – Disciplinary Order

Denotes that registration was cancelled due to a disciplinary order.

Current

Denotes Trainees:  Engineers-in-Training and Geoscientists-in-Training whose registration is current.

Current – Practising

Denotes Professional Registrants (Professional Engineers, Professional Geoscientists, Professional Licensees Engineering and Professional Licensees Geoscience who have met the ongoing requirements to maintain their right to engage in Reserved Practice.

Current – Non-Practising

Denotes individual Registrants (Professional Engineers, Professional Geoscientists, Professional Licensees Engineering and Professional Licensees Geoscience) who are not currently practising engineering or geoscience.  Individual registrants with non-practising status do not have the right to engage in the Reserved Practice of professional engineering or professional geoscience unless they do so under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer or a Professional Licensee Engineering whose supervision is conducted within their authorized area of Reserved Practice.  Their professional designations must add the qualifying words “(Non-Practising)” or “(Retired)”, e.g. P.Geo.(Non-Practising) or P.L.Eng.(Retired).

PGA Transition

Denotes the change to a category of registration due to the introduction of the Professional Governance Act (“the PGA”). Former Professional Engineer and Professional Geoscientist Non-Resident Licensees were converted to Professional Engineer and Professional Geoscientist Registrants under the PGA.

Registrant Category Transition

Denotes the conversion of a Professional Engineer Non-Resident Licensee or Professional Geoscientist Non-Resident Licensee to a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist Registrant under the Engineers and Geoscientists Act.

Suspended – Disciplinary Order

Denotes suspension of registration due to a disciplinary order for a period of time as set out in the Disciplinary Decision or Consent Order, or that requires the individual Registrant to complete certain requirements in order to regain registration.

Suspended - Failure to report/comply Continuing Education Requirements

Denotes individual registrations suspended as of October 1 each year due to a failure to report mandatory information or comply with Continuing Education requirements by September 30 of each year.  This will normally be followed by a change of status to Cancellation – Not Renewed by Registrant on December 31 of the same year unless the individual Registrant meets the reporting and compliance requirements during their suspension.
