Upholding Standards of Inclusivity and Respect at Conference 2024
Engineers and Geoscientists BC is committed to ensuring our professions, programs, and events uphold our standards of inclusivity and respect. A session presented at the 2024 Annual Conference and entitled “Capitalizing on Neurological Differences to Engage Women in Engineering” did not meet these standards. As a result, this session is not available for streaming.
We acknowledge and regret some of the material presented was upsetting for members of the audience and we apologize. Some content presented was not aligned with Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s core values and our goal of making a positive impact in the world by advancing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Harmful stereotypes were shared and there was a lack of evidence-based connection between neuroscience and portions of the content. We have addressed these issues with the presenter.
In response to concerns raised by members of the audience, we are taking steps to prevent a recurrence of this issue
These steps include:
- A revised review process: We will be implementing changes to our review process for all Continuing Education sessions related to EDI at our Annual Conference. This process will be similar to the review procedures already in place for technical sessions. This review will ensure content is aligned with current research, best practices, and Engineers and Geoscientists BC core values.
- An updated code of conduct: The conference code of conduct will include clearer guidelines for presenters and content. This update will help ensure future presentations adhere to our values of respect, inclusivity, and evidence-based practice.
- Engineers and Geoscientists BC is committed to learning from this experience and will strive to reflect the diversity of the public we serve. Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work toward these improvements.
